1 Chapter 1 The Rise of Civilizations
Lesson 1 Early Humans

2 Social Lived in small groups of 20-30
Both men and women were in charge of finding food Women gathered so they could stay close to the children and teach them what food to eat Trapped small animals Kept camp safe Men Wander away from camp to hunt Parents pass on practices, skills, and tools to children to ensure the survival of later generations Equality between men and women Gathered around fire to tell stories

3 Political Tribes were known to be lead by leaders or elders
No known political system was put in place where members were in higher ranking than their peers Although no borders existed, tribes would migrate in patterns to follow the supply of food, many times tribes would follow the same pattern for years on end Individual tribes live in seclusion causing little or no conflicts between other tribes Because of the equal rankings among everyone, there were no revolts or revolutions

4 Interaction Between Humans and the Environment
Followed animal migration and vegetation cycles Used fire to keep warm during the Ice Ages Used caves for shelter and the fire for protection Paintings have been found on walls of caves Live in camps wherever they migrate, building temporary homes Used the wood and stone around them to make weapons for hunting

5 Cultural Prehistory- “a time before writing was developed”
The Chauvet cave contains more than 300 paintings of lions, oxen, owls which are things the Paleolithic people did not hunt, which indicates they were painted for religious reasons. These artists painted with fingers and twigs and would mix mineral ores with animal fat to create certain colors such as red, yellow, and black Some scholars believe these paintings were done as a religious ritual to bring success in hunting

6 Economic Relied on hunting and gathering
Gathered wild nuts, fruit, berries, wild grains, and green plants Hunted buffalo, horses, bison, reindeer, fish, and shell fish Made stone tools (flint, hand axes, bow and arrow, etc.) Primary job was to find enough food to eat Everyone worked towards the mutual goal of surviving including men, women, and children Little wealth stratification Tribes live in seclusion so they did not trade with other tribes
