5 Electives, as per the Handbook
“…opportunity to… carry out a suitable study program of (your) choice.” In province, nationally or internationally 12 weeks total

6 Electives, In practical terms
Explore areas of Interest Confirm or refute pre-existing tendencies Travel to other centers Lay the groundwork for residency of choice Establish reputation Facilitate reference letters

7 Electives are Credit Courses: i.e. you can’t get promoted or graduate without successful completion of your electives Twelve (12) weeks worth of electives to graduate ITER is required to obtain credit This can be the hardest part of the elective! YOU are responsible for obtaining official evaluation

8 Electives: eligibility
Can be done as soon as you’re promoted to 3rd year you can do electives before your Core rotations. Electives must be APPROVED before you begin the rotation There are very real Legal and Professional consequences.

9 PRE-CORE ELECTIVES ADVANTAGES Provides early feedback
Head start on credits (“extra” points) Flexibility later in post-core period DISADVANTAGES Disrupts final “summer holiday” (of your life) Far in advance of CaRMS process for purpose of reference letters Clerkship inexperience

10 Electives: essential information
Submitting a request ≠ approval of request Oral approval of a request ≠ approval of request Approval must be in writing from Electives Coordinator Minimum duration: two (2) weeks

11 Electives: the process
Decide early on desired elective experience (4-6 months) Ask for help in deciding (coordinator, local faculty, residents…) Apply to host faculty and fulfill their requirements If the host is MUN, proceed to #3 If host is not MUN, still need local application in #3 Submit elective application to UGME Deadline: 2 months in advance of start of elective UGME will help facilitate elective placements in NL You are responsible for all arrangements Travel Accommodations Local health authorities, if applicable

12 International Electives
Any Electives/Selectives outside of Canada/US Contact Dr. Jill Allison Global Health Officer In short, Students will: Research the Proposed Site Create Course Objectives Work with the Electives Coordinator, UGME Staff and GHO to arrange the elective and do any required prep work.

13 Electives: How it’s done
1. Submit elective application to UGME Fax: (709) In person to UGME reception 2. Electives Coordinator Reviews application 3. Application is Approved or Not 4. If approved, form is signed, dated, scanned and ed to the student A hard copy may be sent

14 Application ≠ Approval
Your elective is NOT approved until you receive an elective application signed and dated by the Electives Coordinator The following ≠ Approval: Oral communication from UGME office Verification from the host institution Keep your signed copy of the form To show to the judge To ensure you get credit for the elective

15 All approved, but I changed my mind!!!
As a rule, one should always be conscientious Conscientiousness strongly correlates with Professionalism If you cancel an elective, informing the following people (in writing) is considered professionally courteous: Host Institution Supervisor at Host Institute UGME Office MUN

16 During the elective Remember:
There is no exam, so relax but consciously be aware of learning experience You represent yourself You represent our medical school You deserve feedback on your performance You need your ITER to be submitted

17 Summary Think and plan ahead APPLY to host school
APPLY to UGME for approval Ensure approval is obtained Perform well and learn Obtain feedback and completed ITER

18 Thank you Questions?
