1 Types of Reactions

2 Drill On your desk, with your group, place the formulas into 2 different groups- ionic and covalent. After, write down why you think you put things into categories.

3 Ionic Covalent FeCl2 H2O BaS CO NaNO3 B2Br4 NH4OH PCl3

4 Agenda Grouping Activity Discussion/Note taking Pinch Card Check-In HW

5 Classify the 5 different types of reactions
I Can… Classify the 5 different types of reactions

6 There are 25 different reactions
Group Activity There are 25 different reactions 5 different categories 5 reactions in each category In your groups, arrange each of the reactions in 1 of the 5 categories

7 When you are done grouping…
Divide the giant whiteboard into 5 sections and rewrite the reactions in each category Devise a name for each category Write out your explanation for why you chose that name Write out what each reaction has in common

8 Types of Reactions

9 What did you name… Strip # 1? Ba + F2 → BaF2

10 Combination/Synthesis
Equation: A + B  AB Symbol: Explanation: Two or more reactants yield one product

11 Strip # Equation 1 Ba + F2 → BaF2 8 MgO + CO2 → MgCO3 11
Combination Examples Strip # Equation 1 Ba + F2 → BaF2 8 MgO + CO2 → MgCO3 11 2Al + 3Br2 → 2AlBr3 14 2H2 + O2 → 2 H2O 19 2Na + H2O → 2NaOH

12 What did you name… Strip # 20? 2KClO3 → 2KCl+ 3O2

13 Decomposition Equation: AB  A + B Symbol: Explanation: One reactant yields two or more products

14 Decomposition Examples
Strip # Reaction 6 H2CO3 →   H2O + CO2 12 Ca(OH)2 →    CaO +  H2O 16 2NaCl  →    2Na  +  Cl2 20 2KClO3 →    2KCl+  3O2 25 NH4OH→   NH3+ H2O

15 Strip # 3? Fe + CuSO4 → FeSO4 + Cu
What did you name… Strip # 3? Fe + CuSO4 → FeSO4 + Cu

16 Single Replacement Equation: AB + C  AC + B --or-- AB + C  CB + A
Symbol: Explanation: If the element is a metal, it switches places with the cation in the compound. If the element is a nonmetal it switches places with the anion in the compound

17 Single Replacement Examples
Strip # Reaction 3 Fe  +  CuSO4  →    FeSO4  +  Cu 5 Zn  +  2HCl  →    ZnCl2  +  H2 10 3Mg + 2AlCl3  →2Al + 3MgCl2 17 Cu + 2AgNO3 → 2Ag + Cu(NO3)2 24 Cl2  +  2NaBr  →    2NaCl  +  Br2

18 What did you name… Strip # 21? Ca(NO3)2 + 2HCl  CaCl2 + 2HNO3

19 Double Replacement Equation: AB + CD  AD + CB Symbol: Explanation: The metals in the reactants switch places to form the products

20 Double Replacement Examples
Strip # Reaction 4 NaCl   +  AgNO3  →   NaNO3  +  AgCl 9 AgNO3 + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO3 15 3CuBr AlCl3 → 3CuCl AlBr3 21 Ca(NO3)2 + 2HCl  CaCl2 + 2HNO3 23 BaCl2  +  Na2SO4  →    2NaCl +  BaSO4

21 What did you name… Strip # 13? 2C4H O2  8CO2 + 10H2O

22 Combustion In General: CxHy + O2  CO2 + H2O CxHy is any hydrocarbon Products in combustion are ALWAYS carbon dioxide and water

23 Strip # Reaction 2 CH4 + 2O2  CO2 + 2H2O 7 C3H8 + 5O2  4H2O + 3CO2
Combustion Examples Strip # Reaction 2 CH4 + 2O2  CO2 + 2H2O 7 C3H8 + 5O2  4H2O + 3CO2 13 2C4H O2  8CO2 + 10H2O 18 2C2H6 + 7O2  6H2O + 4CO2 22 2C7H O2  14CO2 + 14H2O

24 What type of reaction?? 2H2O  2H2 + O2

25 What type of reaction? Zn + H2SO4  ZnSO4 + H2

26 2C8H18 + 25O2  16CO2 + 18H2O What type of reaction?

27 2Al + 3I2  AlI3 What type of reaction?
(3:45)

28 Pb(NO3)2 + 2KI  PbI2 + 2KNO3 What type of reaction?

29 Question Why do you think knowing the types of reactions is helpful??

30 Where are we going next…
Start to predict products!! Example: FeCl3 + NH4OH →

31 Homework Complete the HW Page Part 1: State which reaction
Part 2: Balance the reaction and state which type of reaction Part 3: Write the equation out, Balance the equation, and State which type of reaction REMEMBER: Zn has +2 charge Ag has +1 charge YOU WILL HAVE TO CRISS-CROSS!! 
