INTRODUCTION -Burkina is a landlocked country with few natural resources -In the region, it is still the most peaceful country and was not engulfed by war -Chief exports are cotton and gold -GDP growth is good -Human Development Index is ranked 183 out of 186, which is bad

HISTORY OF FOREIGN AID Burkina initially sought aid for its internal problems. Historical major donors have been mostly from the EU and the US Burkina is highly dependent on foreign aid

WORLD BANK Projects are centered to increase business atmosphere and overall economic development Trying to make communities self sustaining Committed $1.147 billion Supported major water projects Supporting power and infrastructure projects currently

U.S AID Ended official presence in 1995, albeit taking an active role there afterwards USAID program in 2004 allocated $15 million Helping counter terrorism and border security Focus on community issues Success due to Burkina being a peaceful country USAID is also conducting some political lobbying

IMF Began in 1963 IMF disburses $10 million per year
Engaged in a new development strategy called SCADD Aiming to increase growth rate and job intensification

European Union EU’s presence in Burkina is mostly through European Commission Constant support through the European Development Fund EC assistance aims to improve infrastructure, and also for poverty reduction EU also helps Burkina via the general budget support.

Created in 2004 by congress Conducted a myriad of projects in Burkina Project results are very positive

Peace Corps Entered in 1966, phased out in 1987, returned in 95.
Ended when Burkina asked Peace Corps to cease sending volunteers Had 1830 volunteers, currently 150 serve All Peace Volunteers are involved in HIV/AIDS education

WATER-AID A non profit set up in England
Millions in Burkina lack proper water and sanitation facilities Water presence in Burkina started in 2001 and increased in 2003. Results are extremely positive

CONCLUSION GDP growth increase is evident
Water accessibility has spread Road accessibility has improved Education rates remain low
