Solar Energy

How is a greenhouse similar to Earth’s atmosphere?
People use greenhouses to grow plants during the winter of the plant seeds in the spring so they can germinate and be planted outside when the weather gets warmer. A greenhouse is a building whose walls and ceiling are made of glass or clear plastic. A greenhouse stays warm on the inside even when it is cold outside. Draw a diagram to show how this occurs. How is a greenhouse similar to Earth’s atmosphere?

When solar energy enters the Earth’s atmosphere it can have 3 potential outcomes:
1) Reflects off the atmosphere and returns to space 2) Absorbed by Earth’s land and water 3) Reflects off Earth’s surface but is absorbed by greenhouse gases and re-radiated back to earth This process is known as the greenhouse effect
4
The Greenhouse effect acts like a blanket for Earth
The Greenhouse effect acts like a blanket for Earth. Without it the average global temperature would be -18°C
6
What are some human activities that can release these gases?
Are greenhouse gases good or bad? Explain. What are some human activities that can release these gases? Video about carbon dioxide levels in one year:
7
Which letter would have the hottest temperature? Why?
How is the Earth heated? Different regions of Earth receive different amounts of solar radiation Which letter would have the hottest temperature? Why?
9
Coriolis Effect & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2mec3vgeaI
Is a phenomenon that cause wind and air to curve as they travel across the earth’s surface
10
Convection Currents - As water (or air) is warmed, it rises causing movement
11
Ocean Currents Surface Currents (10% of all currents in the ocean)
Created by the wind (solar heating) Coriolis Effect Deep Currents (90% of all currents in the ocean) Created difference in salinity concentrations (highly concentrated salt water will sink through gravity)
