7.2 Conservation of Energy
#1 7.2 Conservation of Energy Systems change as energy flows and changes from one part of the system to another. Each change transfers energy or transforms energy from one form to another.
11
7.2 Energy flow How can we predict how energy will flow?
One thing we can always be sure of is that systems tend to move from higher to lower energy.
12
#2 7.2 Sources of energy The chemical potential energy stored in the food you eat is converted into simple sugars that are burned as your muscles work against gravity as you climb the hill.
13
#4, 5, 6
14
7.3 Conservation of Energy
#7, 8 7.3 Conservation of Energy The idea that energy tranforms from one form into another without a change in the total amount is called the law of conservation of energy. The law of energy conservation says the total energy before the change equals the total energy after it.
15
7.3 Conservation of Energy
#9 7.3 Conservation of Energy When you throw a ball in the air, the energy transforms from kinetic to potential and then back to kinetic.
16
7.3 Conservation of Energy
#10 7.3 Conservation of Energy Many people are concerned about “running out” of energy. What they worry about is running out of certain forms of energy that are easy to use, such as fossil fuels like oil and gas.
17
7.3 Conservation of Energy
Regular (incandescent) light bulbs convert only 10% of electrical energy to light. That means 90% of the energy is released as wasted heat.
18
7.3 Conservation of Energy
It took millions of years to accumulate these fuels because they are derived from decaying, ancient plants that obtained their energy from the Sun when they were alive. Because it took a long time for these plants to grow, decay, and become oil and gas, fossil fuels are a limited resource. 7.3 Conservation of Energy Other forms of energy, such as thermal energy, flowing water, wind, and solar energy are not as limited.

EXPECTATIONS for CFU TAKE NOTES!!!!!!!!
C – None H – your getting it now A – Transformations & Ek/Ep practice M – only your group leader P – everyone! S – YOU WILL BE PREPARED FOR THE NEXT ACTIVITY
20
What are the following Energy TransformationS
CFU
21
CFU Describe an energy transformation that took place in each of the numbered events below. There is a spring attached to the screen door on Elijah’s front porch. Elijah opens the door, stretching the spring (1). After walking through the doorway (2), Elijah lets go of the door, and the spring contracts, pulling the door shut (3).
22
CFU Calculate the height that a cat can jump if it has a potential energy of 4000 J and a mass of 4-kilograms.
23
CFU Calculate the speed of a 4 kilogram cat with 5000 J of kinetic energy.

EXPECTATIONS for Gallery Walk
C – With your group H – only your group mates, textbook, notes A – Transformations & Ek/Ep practice M – EVERYONE P – everyone! S – SUCCESS! DEFINE CHEATING: NOT working on the problem with your group Waiting until group members solve the problem and copying the work down Unaccountable talk Getting answers/help from another group If your caught cheating, you will be pulled out of the group and required to complete the questions on your own.
