Preserving Biodiversity
Efforts are being made to preserve biodiversity, by keeping endangered species in zoos. This is known as ex-situ preservation, meaning out of place. Wildlife preserves are in-situ preservation, keeping the animal/plant in its native habitat. Breeding programs like the one China hopes to increase the population of an endangered species such as Pandas. Anti-poaching laws have been passed by most countries, although some countries have trouble enforcing them. A general treaty, called CITES was signed by 180 countries in 1992.

Seed Banks Companies, governments, and universities are gathering and storing a wide variety of seeds of plants in the hopes of preserving rare plant species for the future. By keeping the seeds of 10% of all seed bearing plants, The Royal Botanic Gardens in Britain hopes to preserve a large piece of the biodiversity in the world.
