3 Understanding the question and pre-bucketing
What is the analytical question asked by this Mini-Q? Which terms in the question need to be defined? Rewrite the question in your own words. Using any clues from the Mini-Q question and the Background Essay, think of possible analytical categories and label the buckets.

4 Document a: Read and ANNOTATE with your group! You should have words circled, phrases underlined, and notes/pictures in the margins. DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS UNTIL YOU HAVE READ AND ANNOTATED! Answer the following questions with your group about Document A: Describe “the house Papa talked about when he held a lottery ticket.” Why do you think he holds the lottery ticket when he describes this house? What does Esperanza mean when she says, “the house on Mango Street is not the way they told it at all”? Count the number of times the word “there” appears at the end of the story. Count how many times it is written in italics. Why is the word repeated so many times? Why are italics used? The last line of the story is, “But I know how those things go.” What does Esperanza “know”? What obstacle to reaching the American Dream is most evident in this story? Are there others?
