Group activity: descriptive writing techniques
As a class, view the restaurant images on page 155 of I&A Discuss possible dominant impressions you might use for the description of a restaurant Select one dominant impression for each group In your unit 1 groups, provide a detailed description of that restaurant using concrete words and active/descriptive verbs that conveys your selected dominant impression.

Group activity: descriptive writing techniques
In your unit 1 groups Do exercise 6.6 on page 160 of I&A For each sentence, write down the descriptive verb you will use to replace “walk” or “said”

Group Activity: Contrasting Descriptions
Select a setting that everyone in the group is familiar with. Suggestions include: the beach, a mall, a particular place or building at FIU, a park, etc. Be specific here. Produce a 1 paragraph description of the setting that uses concrete language and engages all 5 senses to create a dominant impression Then, produce a second paragraph description of the same place but with a drastically different dominant impression Ex place: GC. Dominant impression 1: Busy and hectic during the day. Dominant impression 2: abandoned and quiet at night The whole group should work on both descriptions rather than dividing them up Produce a single paper to turn in for the whole group
