Chemical Changes
2
This usually requires a NEW substance to be formed
Chemical Properties A chemical property is the ability of a substance to change in composition This usually requires a NEW substance to be formed Examples of chemical properties Flammability Reactivity
3
Flammability Flammability is the ability of a material to burn in the presence of oxygen Flammability may be a property in some cases, like gasoline so your engine runs or newspaper to start a fire Laws regulate how flammable sleepwear can be, the less flammable in this case the better
4
Reactivity Reactivity is how easily a substance chemically combines with other substances Examples of reactive elements include oxygen and iron (think about something rusting) Examples of less reactive elements include the Noble gases and nitrogen
5
Signs of Chemical Change
A chemical change occurs when a substance reacts and forms one or more NEW substances Clues for a chemical change include a change in color, the production of a gas, and the formation of a precipitate (a solid that forms in a liquid solution) When a chemical change occurs the composition of the matter changes When a physical change occurs the composition of the matter remains the same
