What does it take to become a citizen?
6
Citizenship What does it take for immigrants, people who come to the U.S. with the intention of living here permanently, to become true blue Americans? In addition to being of good moral character, they must be 18 years old and have been lawfully admitted into the United States as permanent citizens. They must have lived in the United States continuously for at least five years and have resided for at least six months in the state where they file their petition. (There are some exceptions to this requirement.) Applicants must have a solid grasp of the English language, be able to read, speak and write words in ordinary usage in the English language, and pass a test administered by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service on American history and principles. Finally, they must take an oath of allegiance.
