Teacher Comments ‘The boys as well as the girls have totally embraced this style of dancing, they even requested a Cha Cha cha at their Valentines Disco' Sarah Norris Year 3/4 teacher 'The dancing has broken down barriers between boys and girls. They are interacting with each other and have definitely improved their social skills'. James Donnelly Year 5/6 Teacher 'This initiative has had a huge impact on their academic work. Their motivation when dancing has carried on into the classroom' Justine Gray Year 6 Teacher 'As a non dancer I've liked that it has a structure and has been easy to teach and dance' Alison Cook Secondary PE Teacher The first quote from Sarah refers to the photographs that you have put up on the wall. These shots are of Sarah’s class in their PE lessons learning the dances ready for their Valentines Dance. Their valentines event was amazing. They had decorated their hall, made cheese straws and mango smoothies. The boys gave the girls carnations and the had two pupils who were Tess and Bruce and compared the whole afternoon. The kids danced for three hours!!!! All had ED in their NCPE lessons The performance carrot is very important ( next slide) It is having an effect on classes’ relationships as teachers are getting youngsters to dance with various partners and improving their knowledge of others in the class. ‘My class seem to have grown up and their concentration levels have improved’ another teacher commented. Average Teacher Training hours devoted to PE are between 4 and 12 hours for all activities. Many teachers are not confident at delivering dance ,particularly contemporary dance. When it is taught badly it can be remembered as ‘be a tree’. This style of dance has motivated many non dance specialists as it has structure.

Performance Opportunities
In class, in school, and in the community Class Celebration Assemblies Proms Promettes Transitional Events Tea dances Competition/Festivals Dance Leaders The performance carrot is a real motivator and can include parents and the rest of the community. All schools will be extended schools by 2010 and are going to have to open their doors in the evenings and holidays. This is a great project for that extension!
