E Q: How did states’ rights have an impact on Georgia and the beginning of the Civil War? Write PT: What conditions caused the North to develop an economic base different from the South? Why were Northern cities larger and more populated then Southern cities?

2 - Economic Differences:
A Nation Comes Apart Write - Economic Differences: - early 1800’s the N & S different economies - North - rocky soil & cold climate could not rely heavily on farming - N states - turn to industry with the invention of the steam engine & factory system

3 - N advantage for Industry
Write - swift rivers -water to power the mills & factories - natural harbors made foreign trade possible

4 - tobacco, corn, rice & indigo
- S warmer climate & fertile soil created an agrarian (agricultural) economy Write - tobacco, corn, rice & indigo - first cash crops suitable for the climate - 1790s cotton gin created a “boom” of cotton production - became “King Cotton”

5 - N rise of industrial economy - lead to growth of cities
Write - N rise of industrial economy - lead to growth of cities - families moved from farms to work in factories - soon realized they could no longer be self-sufficient (grow own crops).

6 - not enough room in cities for a farm (raise cattle, hogs & chickens)
Write - nor could you grow your own food - people became interdependent - dependent on one another for various needs such as food, shelter & clothing

- ex: relied on: Write - a butcher for meat - milk from a dairy - coal or firewood from a dealer - people in N expected more from govt - police & fire protection

8 - S few factories & jobs to attract workers to cities
Write - provided for themselves - expected little from govt - S more independent N

Regional Differences Write - different economies in N & S - political leaders in N & S states began to look at important issues & how they affected only their region - not how it affected the nation as a whole - this is called sectionalism
