1 Program Review and Disaggregation to Advance Student Equity and Close Gaps

2 Colleges use program review. Colleges use student equity plans.
Opportunity! Apply Student Equity Plan- level disaggregation to Program Review = Integrates equity into individual program analyses; allows more strategic planning and resource allocation to eliminate achievement differences

3 Connecting Student Equity Planning to Program Review

4 Example: Disaggregated Course Success Rates
Percentage Point Gap African American 67% -15 Asian 85% +3 Filipino 78% -4 Latino/a 71% -11 Native American 80% -2 Pacific Islander White 86% +4 Decline to state 90% +8 Student success in all courses in the program 82% *or degree completion rates, or course enrollment rates, etc.

5 Case Study: Foothill College
For Student Equity Plan, analysis of college-level course success data identified three disproportionately impacted student groups (African-American, Latino/a, and low income students). Biology Program Review revealed 9 percentage point gap for African-American and Latino/a students in their courses ?? All courses? Where to deploy resources effectively? The bio faculty were especially interested in taking advantage of the college’s new embedded tutoring program, but not enough tutors to embed in all classes.

6 Case Study: Foothill College
Class Percentage Point Gap Number of D.I. students enrolled in last three years Number of Students Lost* Biol 13 -32 18-20 5-6 Biol 15 1-2 Biol 9 -23 30-42 7-9 Bio 12 -21 36-44 Biol 41 -20 24-44 Biol 10 -17 33-37 Biol 40A -10 21-28 Biol 40B -3 Biol 40C -4 The “Number of Students Lost” is calculated by multiplying the percentage point gap (as a percent) by the number of targeted students. For example, in the table above, approximately fewer targeted students succeeded in Bio 10 than expected. It is essentially an expression of the achievement gap in terms of numbers of students rather than success rates. For more discussion see page 3 of

7 Step 1: Indicator Alignment
Review success indicators from your college SEP Course success, transfer rates, basic skills completion, access, other Compare to college program review template Are program faculty/staff prompted to review the data for each success indicator? Faculty are often intimidated by data and perceived difficulty of analysis. Identifying gaps for them allows them to focus on analysis and planning

8 Step 2: Data Dissaggregation and Distribution
For success indicators, disaggregate college-level success data to program level Key: Identify any disproportionate impact/gaps before distributing to program faculty Allows faculty to focus on addressing gaps

9 Step 3: Support Program Practitioners
Students Faculty/ College Student Success Be ready to help develop activities/plans, identify resources via local allocation process Connect to student equity committee Information/professional development re: what works? Connect to student equity committee to Assistance identifying financial resources Information/professional development: What is working to close gaps?

10 Effective Pedagogical Practices
Syllabus redesign Increasing knowledge of microaggressions and stereotype threat, and how they negatively impact learning Including culturally responsive pedagogy Cultivating growth mindedness Including classroom activities to acknowledge and strengthen students’ personal identities as learners in your discipline Authentic assessment techniques Incorporation of service learning activities In no particular order!

11 Step 3: Support Program Practitioners with Additional (Multivariate) Disaggregation
Students Faculty/ College Student Success Interventions targeting students may benefit from disaggregation by things like… Special populations Major declared or not And many, many more! (DataMart?) Interventions aimed at classroom practice and/or institution-level policies may benefit from disaggregation by things like … Instructor Enrollment priorities, allowing late adds Online/hybrid/face to face instruction Service learning component to class And many many more! (DataMart?) Connect to student equity committee to Assistance identifying financial resources Information/professional development: What is working to close gaps?

12 Activity: Pair-Share What types of disaggregated data are provided as part of your college’s program review (PR)? Do you identify disproportionate impact using your PR? Where are you finding disproportionate impact at the program level? How does it compare to the overall institutional level DI analysis?
