1-4 Order of Operations Main Idea Evaluate expressions using the order of operations.
2
Evaluate this: 6-5x3÷5+1= 4
3
Order of Operations Evaluate the expressions inside grouping symbols. Example: 3+(4x3) = 3+12 = 15 Evaluate all powers. Example: Multiply and divide in order from left to right. Add and subtract in order from left to right.
4
Evaluate again using the orders of operations: 6-5x3÷5+1=
5
6-5x3÷5+1= Step 1. Does not apply because there are no ().
powers. Step 3. Multiply 5x3 = 15. Then divide 15 ÷5=3. We are left with: 6-3+1= Step = =4.
6
22-3(8-2)+12÷4= Step 1. (8-2)=6 We now have 22-3(6)+12÷4= Step 2. Does not apply. No exponents/powers Step 3. 3(6)=18 and 12÷4=3 We now have Step 4. Solving Left to right, 22-18=4 and 4+3=7
