Monroe Doctrine Even though Adams gains less electoral and popular votes the decision still goes to the House of Reps. Speaker of the House Henry Clay throws his support to Adams (Corrupt Bargain)

President Adams After winning the Presidency he appoints Henry Clay as Sec. of State, leaving many people including Jackson to feel this was a “Corrupt Bargain.” Proposed a grand idea of unifying the country through canals and highways (C&O broke ground in 1828) Proposed the development of science and art Would eventually lose to Jackson in the bitter campaign of 1828 Historian Thomas Bailey observed, "Seldom has the public mind been so successfully poisoned against an honest and high-minded man."
