7 Interpretations and Guidelines

8 Interpretations and Guidelines
* * In high school, if ball goes directly out-of-bounds = Goal Kick; if saved and held by GK = play continues

9 How to administer a PK Be prepared and willing to make the call!
Commit to the call If there is doubt in your mind, consult with your AR, even if only to buy time to think You usually don’t need to caution defender Expect grumbling from defenders Allow them to express a different opinion Move away from troublemakers

10 How to administer a PK Hand the ball to the kicker
Instruct him/her to wait for the whistle Look for acknowledgement Instruct the GK to remain on the goal line until the ball is kicked Motion towards AR to remind GK that there is someone always watching him/her

11 How to administer a PK Clear the PA and arc of all other players
“Everyone behind the paint! Keep your feet off the paint” Instruct all the “extra” players to remain outside until the ball is kicked Position yourself to the left side of all players, about 15 yards out, facing the players at 45 degree angle The players should “feel your presence”

12 Referee Positioning at PK

13 How to administer a PK Blow the whistle to signal OK to take kick
Repeat to players “Stay out until the ball is kicked!” If you see early encroachment, note which players so you can blame them later When the kicker is two steps from the ball, turn to see kick and GK movement Instruct AR in advance on what is permissible movement and what signal to give if needed

14 If any problems... Allow the kick to be taken
Loudly blow whistle and yell “NO, NO, NO” Immediately point to the problem Field players encroaching GK movement too early & too much Announce the decision loudly Explain to coaches if necessary Stay calm, slow down, take your time to repeat full protocol

15 The Value of Protocol Mentally practice the protocol often, and before each game Have confidence in the protocol Protocol will help you slow down, take things in step, be prepared for next step Protocol will calm you and the players Protocol will make difficult decisions easier
