2. Basic Facts Phylum Chlorophyta Perform photosynthesis
Most possess cell walls with cellulose
Generally accepted that plants arose from ancestral green algae
Live in both aquatic and terrestrial environments
Aquatic: primarily freshwater but some are marine
Terrestrial: damp soil, cracks in tree bark
Some are symbionts with other organisms
Ex. Some grow together with fungi as “dual organisms” called lichens
