Waves Wave properties
2
Electromagnetic Spectrum
All electromagnetic waves are transverse.
3
The Electromagnetic Spectrum
Light is an electromagnetic wave.
4
The Electromagnetic Spectrum
6
FM radio waves have: Shorter wavelength Higher frequency Higher energy Than AM radio waves.
7
Light travels in electromagnetic waves
11
Sound travels in longitudinal waves.
Wavelength The wavelength of a longitudinal (compression) wave is the distance from compression to compression OR rarefaction to rarefaction. The wavelength of a transverse wave is the distance from crest to crest OR trough to trough. Sound travels in longitudinal waves.
12
Frequency – the number of wavelengths that pass by a point each second.
One second The SI unit for frequency is the Hertz (Hz). One Hertz represents one wavelength per second.
13
Relationship between wavelength, frequency, and energy
14
Amplitude
15
The more energy a wave carries, the higher the amplitude.
Amplitude and Energy The more energy a wave carries, the higher the amplitude.
