1 What is a constellation?
To Infinity and Beyond! Developing: Describe a constellation. Secure: Explain what a light year is. Exceeding: Arrange in order of size astronomical objects. Entrance Activity Milky Way What is a constellation? Tool Box – Key Words Constellation Galaxies Milky way Universe Light year Solar system

2 Key word Constellations An easily recognized group of stars that appear to be located close together in the sky and that form a picture of imaginary lines connecting them. Constellations are usually named after an animal, a character from mythology, or a common object. (See Big Dipper, Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor.)

3 Teacher Explanation Constellations Before compasses were invented, people could use the stars to guide them. Polaris was a commonly used star as it is always above the North pole. Sailors also used Constellation (Patterns of stars) to identify their location.

4 Class Activity Constellations Can you spot the Big Dipper? It looks like a frying pan.

5 Class Activity Constellations Can you spot the Orion’s Belt? Three stars in a straight line.

6 Learning Activity Constellations Complete the constellation activity sheet by identifying all of the constellations in each season. Extension Activity Create your own combination of constellations and get your partner to identify them.

7 Student Reading Activity
Research Research Find four facts in the following script of text. Student Reading Activity Stars are huge balls of gas that give out large amounts of energy. The Sun is a star. The stars you see at night do not seem very bright compared with the Sun because they are much further away. These stars are around us all the time, We cannot see them during the day because light from them is very faint compared with the light from the Sun. A collection of stars grouped together is called a galaxy. We are part of a galaxy called the milky way. All the galaxies and the space between them is called the Universe. We measure the gap between galaxies in light years.

9 The distance that light travels in one year.
Key Word Alert! Light Year The distance that light travels in one year. (Speed of light = 3x108m/s)

10 Light Year 1) How far away do you think it is to the next star?
Class Discussion Light Year 1) How far away do you think it is to the next star? 2) How far away is the next galaxy? 3) How long does it take light to travel from one side of the universe to the other? How long does it take the Suns light to reach Earth? 4.2 Light years 2.2 million light years 4.6 billion light years 8 minutes and 20 seconds
