You and the Emergency System
Step 1 – Recognize that an emergency exists. Step 2 – Decide to act Step 3 – Activate the EMS System Step 4 – Give Care until help arrives

Recognizing an Emergency
Unusual noises Unusual sights Unusual odors Unusual appearances or behaviors

Deciding to act In order to help, you must decide to act. Anything you can do will be helpful, even the slightest thing. Question – Why do people decide not to act?

Why don’t people Help? Pressure of the other people around
Uncertainty about the victim Type of injury or illness Fear of catching a disease Fear of doing something wrong Fear of the other person’s race, gender, etc…

Activate the EMS System
Calling is the most important step you can take in any emergency.

Getting Permission Do not give care to a conscious person who refuses it. If the victim is a child or infant, try to get permission from parent or gaurdian first. If the child/infant is in a life threatening situation, consent is implied. Also, if any victim is unconscious, consent is impiled

Good Samaritan Laws When a citizen responds to an emergency and acts as a Responsible and Prudent person would under the same conditions, Good Samaritan immunity generally prevails. For example, a reasonable and prudent person would – Move a victim Only if the victims life is in danger Ask a conscious person for permission before giving care Check the victim for life-threatening conditions before providing care

Be Prepared Keep info about you and family available
Keep medical records and insurance up to date 1st Aid Kit in every house and car Learn the skills Wear medical Tags

Glove Removal Pinch the glove at the wrist, pulling glove toward the fingertips, leaving partially on. Pull of the 2nd glove, pulling it inside-out. Finish the 1st glove
