3 Separatists The Pilgrims (separatists) were escaping religious persecution under King James I What’s the difference between separatists and puritans? Separatists: Extreme Puritans. They wanted to completely separate from the Church of England. They believed that they had been elected by God for salvation

4 But they thought it could be salvaged.
Puritans Puritans believed that the Church of England was badly in need of reform. But they thought it could be salvaged.

5 The Pilgrims (AKA Separatists)
In 1608, Separatists first move to Holland, an area long known for its toleration. 1620, they set out for a more remote location that would allow them to protect their community. anksgiving/mayflower-myths

6 Governing the New World
The Pilgrims land outside of the charter’s grant and must form their own governing body The Mayflower Compact, 1620, was the 1st example of direct democracy in colonies. Supported the idea of majority rule

How is the role of the church different in Plymouth than it is in Jamestown? 2. Who controls creating and enforcing laws in Plymouth? 3. Who was the document created for? 4.
