03/06/2005 RF signal definition 2 rings 1 RF system / ring independent During the acceleration ramp, can be driven at different frequencies (p-Pb collisions) the 2 RF are naturally convergent, and are equal to a reference value during physics For observation during the acceleration ramp, the 2 RF are provided to AB/BDI via BST and experiments via TTC. RF Frequency Injection @ 450 GeV equivalent Protons MHz Lead ions MHz Flat Top @ 7000 GeV equivalent MHz MHz 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS

03/06/2005 RF signal generation RF tracks the raising magnetic field during the ramp RF = sinusoidal signal with its phase changing continuously RF Spectrum is not perfectly clean (spurious) Might be a problem for the beam lifetime (potential emittance blow-up) Filtering expected from the VCXO, but still a concern To solve this (potential) noise problem use a fixed reference frequency, generated by a pure commercial synthesizer. Once at top energy, before the physics starts, re-synchronizing of the 2 rings with this reference. (like during test beams). More complex. 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS

03/06/2005 At the TTC level Source signals Guaranteed period Outside RING1 BC Stable during physics Can be (almost) everything Orbit RING2 REFERENCE Signal artifacts (reminder): Nothing during access, after beam dump, during shut-down or repair During physics the RF guaranties a clean, stable, non-interrupted BC and Frev Implications for TTC: Is this reference clock needed? => if yes, we have to ask the RF to provide it Need for common clock outside the LHC physics? (Cosmics, …) Need to be able to switch from the machine clock to a internal clock outside the guaranteed period 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS

03/06/2005 TTC system status The TTC transmission crates (in CCC) are getting old Only 4 crates + 1 The number of RF pairs have increased Some lasers are ageing… …and are obsolete as some other components Some schematics are missing Same problem for the receiving crates in experiments and labs Only 12 crates, and also getting obsolete We are crucially missing remote monitoring 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS

03/06/2005 TTC backbone upgrade Backbone: from SR4 to the experiments Encoded BC & Orbit Bruce’s Scheme 4 crates: 1 TTC 1 TTC/SPS 1 TTC spare 1 BST 1 + spare Present Scheme 4 crates: 1 TTC ring 1 1 TTC ring 2 1 TTC ref? 1 TTC spare RF transmitters RF receivers 2/3 + spare 3 or 6 fibres needed (5 compensated only) 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS

TTC backbone upgrade options
03/06/2005 TTC backbone upgrade options OPTION 1: redesign the TTC crates in CCC 3 central crates in the CCC + spares (assuming that the reference clock is needed) New hardware, with Signal shaping (RF signals are sinusoidal) monitoring BC switching - PLL Transmission protocol Re-encoding, or 2 separated fibres 160.32 phase 80.16 ref I/P 40.08 mon I/P I/P sync O/P data LHC SPS orbit Laser O/P I/P Optical splitter Enc o/p A data i/p Sync o/p B data i/p TDM BM Orbit synchro VCXO-PLL Cd monitor I/p O/p ready reset I/p LHCrx -2Vreg 1 ClkGen 4 . 8 M H Z Int Ext I/p To exp Next crates LHC orbit SPS orbit MHz clock PRINCIPLE: basically just re-transmit the signals delivered by the RF QUESTION: who will do the 24/24 support? 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS
11
TTC backbone upgrade options
03/06/2005 TTC backbone upgrade options OPTION 2: AB/RF extends the transmission of its signals up to the experiments Could deliver directly to the experiments: RF frequency /10 (40.078xx MHz) - sinusoidal Orbit pulse 5ns Probably on 2 separated fibres RF receivers = VME64 6U modules with a simple monitoring of the optical signal via VME No special hardware needed (VME 6U crate + SBC for monitoring) A priori, 2 rx or 2 tx per RF module (BC and Orbit on separated fibres) 1 rx/tx pair ~ 5000€ New TTC module design required (~TTCmi): signal shaping, monitoring, Clock switching PLL Clock & Orbit Fanout INTEREST: Rx/Tx hardware already selected Existing team for the RF support (RF piquet) PRINCIPLE: basically just extend the signals delivered by the RF up to the experiments 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS
12
TTC backbone upgrade options
03/06/2005 TTC backbone upgrade options If agreement on this option 2: Possible(?) transmission schemes – for information: No optical fibres have been reserved for the TTC even in the previous scheme => should be reserved asap Point 7 forbidden for fibres in the tunnel (very high radiations) Probably 2 separated fibres for BC and Orbit Estimated price for tx/rx per experiment: 3x5000 € = € Technical solutions will be chosen & proposed by the AB/RF if this option 2 is required and accepted Should not take into account the drift with temperature – will be solved presumably internally in the experiments if needed TUNNEL Advantages: Small temperature variation Drawbacks: Radiations on point 3 - ? SURFACE CABLING Advantages: Radiation free Drawbacks: Temperature variation = 6 fibres + spares 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS
13
TTC backbone upgrade options
03/06/2005 TTC backbone upgrade options Options Needs Advantages Drawbacks 1 – TTC centralized at the CCC 1 fibre for BC & Orbit 3 tx crates at the CCC 3 fibres + spares / exp. 3rx crates at the exp. Less fibres No dephasing BC/orbit Central system No support defined New design needed 2 – RF extended up to the experiments BC & Orbit on separated fibres 24tx at the SR4 6 fibres + spares / exp. 6rx at the exp. On-call support possible Tx/rx modules almost defined More fibres (6 per exp + spares) Dephasing BC/Orbit? Conclusion: Asking the AB/RF group to extend the transmission of the RF signals seems to be logical and safer for the system maintenance 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS
14
TTC backbone upgrade options
03/06/2005 TTC backbone upgrade options And now … ? Many technical discussions already with AB/RF and TS/EL Option2 seems to be technically possible (surface or tunnel) Needs agreement from the experiments If the experiments agree on this: Needs agreement from AB Write an EDMS document in collaboration with the PH and AB departments to agree on the principle of the change of responsibilities Propose/define a way of financing this change Technical solutions will be added later according to the AB/RF and experiment constraints and preferences Begin the specification and design of the new “TTCmi” module 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS

Proposal: 40 MHz/Frev distributed by AB/RF
03/06/2005 Proposal: 40 MHz/Frev distributed by AB/RF All experiments must agree. We (AB/RF) choose the implementation: Simple point to point analog optical link. Receiver in 160 mm-6U VME cards housed in a VME crate (monitoring of optical power accessible from CCR). No compensation of thermal drifts. 6 ns drift in ½ year for 10 km long link (measured) 100 ps drift in ½ day for 10 km long link (measured) Receiving modules must be located in a room that is easily accessible to our piquet service. Hardware must be paid for by the experiments. 3rd june 2005 Philippe Baudrenghien AB/RF

Fibres/attenuators procurement
03/06/2005 Fibres/attenuators procurement For single mode patch-cords (9/125um, ST/PC), the standard available lengths/approx prices are: Simplex 1m 15 Sfr., 2m 16 Sfr., 5m 17 Sfr., 10m 20 Sfr. Duplex 1m 30 Sfr., 2m 32 Sfr., 5m 34 Sfr., 10m 40 Sfr. For single mode attenuators, the standard attenuation levels are: 3dB, 5dB (for connection between TTCex and TTCrq with a 1:16 splitter) 10dB 15dB (for connection between TTCex and TTCrq without a splitter) For caps, the 2 types are: female (transmitter/coupler/receiver side) male (fibre side) 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS
20
Fibres/attenuators procurement
03/06/2005 Fibres/attenuators procurement provided by the TS/EL group – not by the Stores because of administrative complications Some patch-cords, attenuators and caps as describe above will be stored in TS/EL for urgent request, the normal delay you can expect for delivery will be 15 days. To place an order, send a budget code the description of what you need to: Oystein Olsen with a copy to Luit de Jonge If you have some special request (special fibre, connector type, attenuators, etc...), you can as well contact Oystein Olsen or Luit De Jonge. 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS

Required to move forward
03/06/2005 Required to move forward Do the experiments… need the Reference Clock? need a common 40MHz clock outside the physics? agree on the principle of asking the AB/RF group to extend the signal transmission? need to standardize more components? need something special for the commissioning? need something special for the 25ns beam next year Available Clocks/Orbits TTC upgrade TTC backbone TTCmi Fibres/attenuators procurement 2005 commissioning Test Beam 03/06/2005 TTC Information Meeting / Sophie BARON-PH/ESS
