1 DO NOW VL: 0 What is the Law of Conservation of Mass? Monday 10/19
Complete the following on your DO NOW handout. Use pg 51 in your INB to answer the question. What is the Law of Conservation of Mass? The law of conservation of mass states that…

2 EQs & Objectives ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: OBJECTIVES:
How do chemical reactions show the law of conservation of mass? OBJECTIVES: 8.5(D)  recognize that chemical formulas are used to identify substances and determine the number of atoms of each element in chemical formulas containing subscripts; 8.5(F)  recognize whether a chemical equation containing coefficients is balanced or not and how that relates to the law of conservation of mass.

3 CHEMISTRY UNIT EXAM ON FRIDAY!
AGENDA Agenda Skittles Lab – Conservation of Mass Exit Ticket Homework Chemistry Unit Exam Review Packet CHEMISTRY UNIT EXAM ON FRIDAY!

4 Skittles – Chemical Equation Lab
Task: Use different colored skittles to practice modeling chemical equations. After using the skittles, draw and color in the atoms/molecules on the reactant and product side. Determine if the equation is balanced. Key Red – Chlorine (Cl) Orange - Sodium (Na) or Iron (Fe) Yellow - Oxygen (O) Green - Hydrogen (H) Purple – Copper (Cu) or Calcium (Ca)

5 EXIT TICKET

6 DO NOW VL: 0 2Na + Cl2 2NaCl Label the reactants and products.
Tuesday 10/20 Copy the chemical equation on your DO NOW handout and answer the following questions. 2Na + Cl NaCl Label the reactants and products. Is this a balanced equation? Show your work.

7 EQs & Objectives ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: OBJECTIVES:
How do chemical reactions show the law of conservation of mass? OBJECTIVES: Students will investigate how evidence of chemical reactions indicate that new substances with different properties are formed.

8 CHEMISTRY UNIT EXAM ON FRIDAY!
AGENDA Pre-AP & Grade Level Pyrite Lab Homework Chemistry Unit Exam Review Packet CHEMISTRY UNIT EXAM ON FRIDAY!

9 Pyrite Lab VL: 2 Put on safety goggles.
Identify the physical properties of sulfur and iron using the hand lens, magnet, and ruler. Record on the data table. Color Size Shape Magnetism

10 Pyrite Lab VL: 2 Using the triple beam balance, measure 4g of sulfur and 7g of iron.

11 Pyrite Lab VL: 2 Mix the sulfur and iron together on one piece of paper. Record the physical properties of the iron-sulfur combination. Place the mixture in the test tube.

12 Pyrite Lab VL: 2 Fill the beaker halfway full of cold water.

13 Pyrite Lab VL: 2 Light Bunsen burner. Using a test tube clamp, hold test tube over flame for 4-5 minutes. Record observations on your handout. Be specific!

14 Pyrite Lab VL: 2 Turn off Bunsen burner. Immediately put the test tube in the beaker with water. Follow the teacher’s instructions for retrieving the new substance.

15 Pyrite Lab VL: 2 Examine the physical properties of the new substance, including the mass. - Record in your notebook.

16 Pyrite Lab VL: 2 Complete the Analysis and Conclusion questions on the handout. If you do not finish, it is homework.

17 DO NOW VL: 0 Wed/Thur 10/21-10/22 Answer the following questions on your DO NOW handout. Complete sentences! How do you know a chemical change occurred in the Pyrite Lab?

18 EQs & Objectives ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: OBJECTIVES:
Why is chemistry important? OBJECTIVES: Students will review the chemistry standards.

19 CHEMISTRY UNIT EXAM ON FRIDAY!
AGENDA Pre-AP & Grade Level Review Stations Homework Chemistry Unit Exam Review Packet CHEMISTRY UNIT EXAM ON FRIDAY!

20 Review Stations VL: 2 Students will go to 6 different review stations and complete the assignments at each station. The teacher will instruct you when to move to the next station. If you finish a station early, work on your HW Review Packet.

21 DO NOW VL: 0 Friday 10/23 Draw the model below and answer the following questions on your DO NOW handout. How many valence electrons does the following atom model have? Name an element this element most likely reacts with?

22 EQs & Objectives ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: OBJECTIVES:
Why is chemistry important? OBJECTIVES: Students will demonstrate mastery of TEKS 8.5 A-F.
