Today’s Objective: Students will summarize the 5 characteristics of a civilization Homework: return signed syllabus by Friday Return signed letter by Friday Have a notebook by Friday Warm Up: (Be prepared to share an answer) Civilization: (noun) - A society or group of people or the process of achieving a higher state of social development. Given the definition of a civilization above, what are some features you expect a basic civilization to have.

Paleolithic Era Neolithic Era

4 Paleolithic Humans In the Paleolithic Era, humans lived in small groups of people. They were nomadic: They moved around, never living in one permanent place.

5 Paleolithic Humans The earliest humans were hunters and gatherers.
They hunted or scavenged wild animals and gathered plants for food. They followed herds of wild animals from place to place.

6 Paleolithic Humans They used simple tools and weapons made from stone, wood, or bone. They lived in temporary shelters They could be taken down and moved quickly.

7 Agricultural Revolution
The Agricultural Revolution, also called the Neolithic Revolution is when humans changed from being hunters and gatherers to farming and living in one place. Easier to grow food than to hunt it.

8 Farming and Domestication of Animals
Farming required people to live in one place. This led to permanent settlements and houses Up to thousands of people

9 Neolithic Era Farming took less time and provided more food than hunting and gathering. People had more free time and they developed art, architecture, culture, and writing.

10 Neolithic Era In summary: The Neolithic Revolution was when humans became more like modern people. Today, we live in societies with large populations. We specialize our jobs. We farm raise livestock to get food. We have developed cultures.

11 Civilization Emerges Agriculture causes a dramatic change in lifestyles People dwell together in farming villages or towns Domestication of animals and the invention of new tools
