2 Rotation of Earth NIGHT DAY
The Earth rotates once every________________ The rotation of the Earth causes ____________since the side facing the Sun is always moving. The rotation of the Earth does not cause seasonal changes. Rotation of the earth 24 hours or 1 day. day and night NIGHT DAY sunlight © Hedgehog Learning

3 Revolution of the earth
Revolution of Earth The Earth revolves around the Sun every _________ __________. The Earth’s revolution causes the _____________ ______ due to the tilt of the Earth. The revolution of the Earth does not cause day or night. Revolution of the earth 365 days or 1 year SUMMER WINTER changes of the seasons WINTER SUMMER © Hedgehog Learning

4 Phases of the Moon © Hedgehog Learning The Moon revolves around the Earth about once every month. What phase of the Moon will occur about two weeks after a full moon? What phase of the Moon will occur about one week after the first quarter?

5 Phases of the Moon © Hedgehog Learning The Moon revolves around the Earth about once every month. What phase of the Moon will occur about two weeks after a full moon? A: New Moon What phase of the Moon will occur about one week after the first quarter? A: Full Moon

6 Please understand the GRAVITY of the situation…
Mass = Gravity Gravity is the force that holds the solar system together. The mass (and thus gravity) of the Sun keeps all the planets orbiting around it. The mass (and thus gravity) of the Earth keeps the Moon orbiting around it. © Hedgehog Learning

7 Tidal Forces – Moon and Sun
The Moon has much greater affect on the Earth’s tides because it is closer to the Earth. When the Moon, Sun, and Earth are aligned (new and full Moon), the tides are the greatest (Spring Tide) © Hedgehog Learning

16 Seasons are caused by the Earth’s revolution and tilt
Seasons are caused by the Earth’s revolution and tilt. In the Northern Hemisphere, we are actually closer to the Sun in winter, but our tilt is away from the Sun, so we don’t have direct sunlight. In the summer, even though we are further from the Sun, we receive direct sunlight for the majority of the day, causing it to be warmer. Summer Solstice Winter Solstice © Hedgehog Learning
