2
A Brief History of Classification
3
1)Grouped organisms by environment (land, air, water)
Aristotle (300’s BC) was the first taxonomist (biologist that groups and names organisms) PROBLEMS: 1)Organisms lived in multiple areas 2)Different languages have different common names What he did: 1)Grouped organisms by environment (land, air, water) 2)Common names
4
Carolus Linneaus (1700’s) Solved by Taxonomic grouping using a system of hierarchy. Taxon groups range from broad characteristics to very specific ones Grouped organisms based upon structural similarities (morphology indicated a relationship) Named organisms with binomial nomenclature based upon taxa, Genus and species
5
Now scientists use evolutionary relationships (phylogeny), DNA sequences, niches in an ecosystem as well as morphology System has been added to by modern taxonomists as new evidence is discovered Domain was added more recently to distinguish prokaryotes and eukaryotes
6
Classification changes based on new evidence.
For a long time, biologists grouped the Giant Panda (left) and the Red Panda (right) in a separate category of mammals by themselves.
7
Classification changes based on new evidence.
Now, however, DNA evidence suggests that the Giant Panda is in fact a bear. Its closest relative is probably the Spectacled Bear.
8
Classification changes based on new evidence.
The Red Panda was a bit more of a mystery, but currently, evidence suggests it is closely related to raccoons, skunks and weasels.
