2 President of the United States, 1961
‘I believe that this nation should commit itself, to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth’ John F Kennedy, President of the United States, 1961

3 The place.. Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA The time.. early evening The date… July The launch.. Apollo 11 The mission… To put a man on the moon To escape from the gravity of the Earth, you need a massive force, you need to burn a huge amount of fuel in liquid oxygen. Apollo used a 110m, 500 tonne rocket called Saturn 5

4 The crew… Michael Collins Neil Armstrong Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin

13 Armstrong and Aldrin spent about two and a half hours on the moon, taking pictures, setting up experiments, and collecting samples of moon rock

14 Before they left the moon they were able to photograph the Earth, as it rose above the horizon.
Neither astronaut can remember who actually took this picture. In 1999, the American magazine, Time, voted this picture as ‘the photographic image of the twentieth century’ The picture is called ‘Earthrise’

16 Eagle returned safely to the command module
Michael Collins took this picture

17 Splashdown, near Hawaii, Pacific Ocean
24 July 1969 Perhaps the riskiest part was still to come To re-enter Earth’s atmosphere at that speed produces a huge amount of FRICTION creating a huge amount of HEAT. This nearly killed the astronauts of Apollo 13 a year later (did you see the film?) But Apollo 11 made it safely back…
