Definition: A civilization is a complex society that includes a stable food supply, social structure, government, religion, arts, writing and technology. “Huh? I don’t get it, Ms. Isakson.” Let’s go through it step by step!

Stable Food Supply A stable food supply means that a society organizes and grows their own food so that the people do not go hungry. How does the United States maintain a stable food supply?

Social Structure All civilizations have an organization of jobs and social levels for people. Social levels mean that some people had a higher status than others. Modern example: Would you rather work at Starbuck’s or be a pediatrician?

Government All civilizations have a government that makes laws and organizes the people. There are many different kinds of government, but all governments have the job of making laws and controlling the people. What kind of government do we have in the United States? Can you name any other types of government?

Religion Civilizations have at least one religion. A religious system includes a set of beliefs in God or gods an includes a way to worship those gods. Does our country have just one religion?

The Arts Civilizations have a highly developed culture that includes creative forms of expression such as painting, architecture and music. Name as many examples of the Arts at Carnegie as you can.

Technology Technology refers to any new inventions or practical tools that are developed by a civilization. All civilizations seek to make life easier and more comfortable, which is why there is always technology. Name some examples of technology in this room.

Writing Civilizations have a highly developed written language. This enables the society to communicate with one another and to record their history. Name some uses of writing that your parents need each day.
