2 Lesson Objectives To understand how shadows, midtones and highlights make up an image To use Dodge, Burn and Sponge to edit photographs All students will use the dodge, burn and sponge tools to begin creating a zombie face with a confidence of 2 Most students use the dodge, burn and sponge tools to begin creating a zombie face with a confidence of 3 or 4 Some students will use additional tools in Photoshop to enhance the image including photo adjustments

4 Dodge, burn and sponge You may have used these tools before in Fireworks. Dodge lightens the pixels Burn darkens the pixels The sponge sucks up the colour, or makes the colour brighter

5 Making a devils eye Burn tool to make the outside darker and increase the pupil size Sponge tool to saturate the colour Dodge to make the white of the eye lighter

6 SHADOWS HIGHLIGHTS MIDTONES
In every image there are light tones, dark tones and middles tones Shadows – blackest part of the image Highlights –whitest part of the image Midtones – anything in the middle SHADOWS HIGHLIGHTS MIDTONES

Duplicate the layer, so that we can easily see a before and after version Rename the new layer “edit”

10 Burn You can alter which tones you are making darker. In this case, we want to make the shadows darker so select shadows from the drop down Select the burn tool Pay attention to the options bar at the top. You want to make the brush a reasonably big size (45) and the exposure low (<20). This means you can build up a shadow and make a more blended effect.

11 Burn Use the burn tool to create a shadow around the eye, and to make the pupil bigger.

12 Dodge Use the dodge tool to make the white of the eye brighter.
Because we are working with the white of the eye, we need to edit the HIGHLIGHTS Dodge Use the dodge tool to make the white of the eye brighter.

13 Make sure it is set to SATURATE. This will make the colour brighter
Sponge You now want to make the iris a brighter colour blue with the sponge tool.

14 Zombie Eye Use the colour levels/vibrancey adjustments to make a Zombie eye!

I did this so that it added more contours to the face, and made the features sharper like a zombie You must use a RANGE of tools to get above a level 4 and explain each. I did this so that it added more contours to the face, and made the features sharper like a zombie. I did it using a big brush with the tolerance low so that it would blend in to the picture better
