Esters are used for making scents and artificial flavorings
Making Esters Esters are used for making scents and artificial flavorings Petrochemicals- are chemicals made from petroleum the organic acids used in making an ester are petrochemicals an organic acid + an alcohol an ester
2
You can make A LOT of different esters by mixing together different organic acids with different alcohols. Write down a couple examples from these suggested formulations on the following 2 slides:

Different Potions! Formulation Ester Name Scent Produced
Methanol + Butyric Acid Methyl butyrate Pineapple or apple Methanol + Benzanoic Acid Methyl benzoate Fruity Ethanol + Formic Acid / Propanol + Isobutyric Acid Ethyl formate / propyl isobutyrate Rum Ethanol + Butyric Acid Ethyl butyrate Pineapple or strawberry Ethanol + Salicylic Acid Ethyl salicylate Oil of wintergreen Ethanol + Heptanoic Acid Ethyl heptanoate Grape Isobutanol + Formic Acid Isobutyl formate Raspberries Butanol + Butyric Acid Butyl butyrate Pineapple Pentanol + Acetic Acid Pentyl acetate Banana Petanol + Pentanoic Acid Pentyl pentanoate Apple Pentanol + Butyric Acid Pentyl butyrate Pear or apricot Isopentanol + Acetic Acid Isopentyl acetate Pear or banana Octanol + Acetic Acid Octyl acetate Fruity-orange Benzanol + Acetic Acid Benzyl acetate Slightly of jasmine

Esters and the scent produced
Isoamyl acetate (isopentyl alcohol, acetic acid, conc. sulfuric acid) - banana Methyl salicylate (methanol, salicylic acid, conc. sulfuric acid) - wintergreen Ethyl butyrate (ethanol, butyric acid, conc. sulfuric acid) - pineapple Benzyl butyrate (benzyl alcohol, benzyl butyrate, conc. sulfuric acid) – apricot/plum Ethyl benzoate (ethanol, benzoic acid, conc. sulfuric acid) - fruity Benzyl acetate (benzyl alcohol, acetic anhydride)- peach Methyl butyrate (methanol, butyric acid) - apple Octyl acetate (n-octyl alcohol, acetic acid, conc. sulfuric acid) - orange A simple way of detecting the smell of an ester is to pour the mixture into some water in a small beaker.
