4 Career Planning Strategies
IMPLEMENTING: Reality Test THEORY: Assessing – Exploring – Searching REALITY: Action through Career Education Course How do your competencies relate to the real career marketplace? Reality Test The first chapters of your Career Planning Strategies textbook introduces you to the theory behind your personal career planning. The theory focuses upon the techniques of self assessment, career exploration, and the job search process. The reality is that you must find a series of jobs now or later in life that relate to your interests and the content that you have learned in higher education. This course serves as your road map. Regardless of the CAREER TRACK that you have selected, the course content will lead you through the creation of a “career portfolio” which should serve you well as a foundation for starting job searches at future times.

5 College to Career Transition
Lectures (large group) Discussion Sessions (smaller groups) Laboratory (weekly individual appointments) Written Projects (creating relevant content) College to Career Transition The Kelley School of Business faculty mandated a requirement for this course in 1938 when Herman Wells, long-time IU President, was Dean. Through several faculty reviews, it has evolved to today’s course. You will find the syllabus on the Oncourse website. The lectures, also called SCOOPS and CLIPS, are designed to deliver content to large groups. The discussion sessions are focused on smaller groups where some interaction can occur. The laboratory consists of weekly 20-minute appointments with your career counselor. These appointments are designed around a personal discussion of projects that lead to the final exercise which is a career portfolio. The written projects draw from the textbook content and involve preparation of career materials that you are likely to use for a lifetime.

6 Course Structure: Lectures
Length: Two 75-minute lectures for 9 weeks Topics: Coincide with textbook chapter headings Instruction Leaders: Faculty, Guests, Corporate Executives SCOOPS: Panels of Business Managers (often alums – 5 sessions) Focus Lectures: Guests and Faculty (special hot topics) Lectures The two 75-minute lectures each week will last for 9 weeks. They will be conducted in classrooms seating large groups and typically use the PowerPoint style of delivering broad-based content. The instruction will be lead by full-time faculty, several guest lecturers, and corporate executives. The executive panels meet in various classrooms in panel formats with a variety of multimedia presentations. Five class sessions from class 4 through class 8 will be called “SCOOPS,” which is an acronym for Selected Career Opportunities Orientation Programs. After SCOOPS and starting in week 5, the faculty and carefully selected guest lectures will finish the lecture session with corporate topic lectures. They are centered around topics covered in your textbook.

7 Course Structure: Discussion Sessions
Style: Optional small group discussions on career topics Length: Two 75-minute sessions at 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. Leaders: Faculty and guest experts Format: Short PowerPoints, video clips, panels Audience: Topical interactive discussions Discussion Session Structure The discussion sessions are optional small group discussions on pre-identified career topics. The interactive discussions are lead by experts and are often given in panel formats. After a short PowerPoint presentation, occasionally supplemented with a relevant videotape, the interactive audience participation completes the learning process.

You will meet one-on-one for about 20 minutes each week in the early evening to discuss a project that you prepared. This project will become part of your required final career portfolio. Reading textbooks, attending lectures, and taking quizzes are important activities in all classes. But, many of us learn best by memorizing while others learn best by just doing. Career education requires an activity-based approach to learning. When you finish this class, you will have completed a package of materials called a “Career Portfolio.” You are likely to use this portfolio for many years during your working life. Your career counselor, during your assigned lab session, will guide your progress throughout the semester.

Foreign Nationals TOPICS: Visas, home country employment, US jobs, etc. Several Discussion Sessions Date Time Location Foreign National websites International Student Services Staff participation/Panels/Experts/Alums Foreign Nationals Foreign nationals face some unique legal limitations in their job search. Programs run by staff faculty and international student organizations aid in enhancing the Career Services Office with special activities, such as resume books and international job programs. There is a special discussion session each week, usually on Mondays, geared especially to foreign nationals. These are co-taught with staff from the International Student Services Office. Please consult the Oncourse schedule under Discussion Sessions for the exact date, time, and location. The X420 course is especially relevant to foreign nationals as it offers a unique insight into how the US employment system functions. It is often quite different than that in their home country. The Foreign National Orientation Program meets once per week and is the equivalent of a discussion session and appropriate grade points are awarded. Other special services may be available to individuals in this group in the UCSO.
