1 FAITH & REASON and the decisions we make…

2 JOURNAL QUESTION: This week we celebrate Catholic Schools Week. In your opinion, what is unique or different or special about attending a Catholic school? OR… How do you think your life would be different if you didn’t attend a Catholic school for your high school education?

3 Proportionalism Has to do with comparing or balancing the good and evil effects that an action causes in a given situation in relation to the end pursued. Everything depends upon the proportion established between the consequences of an act.

4 Intrinsically Evil Acts
Acts which, in and of themselves, independent of circumstances and intentions, are always gravely wrong. (CCC 1756)

5 Examples: blasphemy perjury murder adultery ___________

6 From the Catechism: #1753 A good intention (for example, that of helping one's neighbor) does not make behavior that is intrinsically disordered, such as lying and calumny, good or just. The end does not justify the means. Thus the condemnation of an innocent person cannot be justified as a legitimate means of saving the nation.

7 FIDES ET RATIO Written by JPII in 1998 It states that a person needs:
FAITH and REASON To know the TRUTH “God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth” (#1)

8 FAITH AND REASON What is REASON? What is FAITH?
According to this document, REASON refers to all that which can be studied and measured Examples: PHILOSOPHY SCIENCE MATH What is FAITH? “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1)
