4 Rise and Expansion of Ottoman Turks
The Ottoman Turks began in the 1300s by converting Christians to Islam. In 1453, they took over the Byzantine Empire and Constantinople, renaming it Istanbul. 5 Rise and Expansion of Ottoman Turks
The goal of the Ottoman Turks was to establish a Caliphate. By the late 1500s, the Ottoman Caliphate spanned from the Middle East to Austria and throughout Africa.

6 Ottoman Society The Ottoman Empire was considered a “gunpowder empire” because of their expert use of firearms. The Ottomans were mostly Sunni Muslims. The Caliphate was led by a sultan, the supreme political and military leader.

7 Ottoman Society The height of the Ottoman Caliphate was from under the greatest ruler, Suleyman I, known as “Grand Turk.” Under the Ottoman Caliphate, two empires emerged: The Safavids and Moguls. Ottoman Empire: 52 Suleiman

8 Ottoman Safavids The Safavids
They were Shia and emerged in modern day Iran. They adopted Persian style and culture. Their imam claimed to be the spiritual leader and executed all Sunnis. This led to major conflict between the Ottoman Caliphate and the Safavid Empire. The total control of Shia religion and laws began the fall of the Safavid dynasty.

9 Ottoman Moguls The Moguls
They were Shia and emerged in modern day India. They were a blend of Persia and India culture. In 1605, Akbar became the Moguls greatest ruler because of the use of heavy artillery and negotiations. The greatest architectural marvel of the Mogul Empire was the Taj Mahal in the mid-1600s, which is considered the most beautiful building in the world. Eventually, a series of bad rulers around the 1700s and arrival of the British led to the fall of the Mogul Empire. Mughals Akbar: 18 Taj Mahal

11 Why it Matters Mankind: Empires: Silk Manchu invaders in 1644 founded the Qing dynasty that would rule China until 1911. The Qing dynasty restored China’s greatness would be the first Chinese civilization to interact with Europeans.

12 Ming Dynasty Ming dynasty: In 1368, the Ming dynasty rose to power.

They began a new era of greatness in Chinese history by creating a centralized government and creating new goods. The Ming dynasty was known for building the Imperial City “Forbidden City” in Beijing in 1406. The Portuguese were first to have direct contact with China and came into conflict with each other. 13 Qing Dynasty Qing dynasty:
In 1644, Manchus invaded and overthrew the dynasty. Under the Qing dynasty, men had to adopt the queue hairstyle, which is a shaved head with braided pigtail. The Qing blended Chinese identity and society. The greatest emperor of the Qing dynasty was Kangxi from 1661 to 1772 and joined China with Russia. Corruption, taxes, and revolts led to the fall of the Qing.

14 Ming and Qing Society Under the dynasties was the first real increase of population in China. Trade and manufacturing also increased greatly. Government continued to control and dominate society. They put a strong influence on family. Chinese novels emerged under the dynasties and the most popular was The Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin in 1791. Dream of Red Chamber

15 Japan Will of Shogun Tokugawa Shogun Powerful “shoguns,” which are leaders, in the 16th and 17th century unified Japan, but isolated them culturally. The greatest rulers were the Tokugawa rule. Their rule was known as the “Great Peace.” They initiated the feudal system and developed trade. The city of Edo, modern day Tokyo, developed into one of the largest cities in the world. 16 Korea and Southeast Asia
Modern Korea was established by the Yi dynasty in 1392, which would become the world’s longest lasting monarchies. They built their capital in Hanseong, modern day Seoul. They developed the Hangul alphabet, based on phonics. Eventually, by the 1600s, Korea developed into a “Hermit Kingdom” because of their isolation.

17 Korea and Southeast Asia
Religious beliefs greatly changed Southeast Asia by the seventeenth-century. Spices attracted European traders and settlers. Europe would continue to fight for trading rights and land.
