1 Objects in the Sky

2 Jupiter is the largest planet! Mars is called the “Red Planet.”
Mercury is the smallest planet! Uranus is called the “Sideways Planet.”

3 Inner Planets A planet whose orbit lies within the asteroid belt.
Mercury. Venus. Earth. Mars. Made of rock or metals with a hard surface (iron) Called terrestrial planets. Terrestrial planets-Earth like planets

4 Outer Planets A planet whose orbit lies outside the asteroid belt.
Jupiter. Saturn. Uranus. Neptune. “Gas giants!” Made of hydrogen, helium, and ice.

5 Stars! Ball of burning gases that give off light and heat.
The biggest star is the Sun. Why do we see different stars in the summer than in the winter?

6 Constellations Constellations are groups of stars that form an identifiable pattern. Often identified with a mythological figure. Modern astronomers divide the sky into eighty-eight constellations with defined boundaries.

7 Asteroids, Meteoroids, Comets
Chunks of rock found between Jupiter and Mars are asteroids. Small chunks of rock that break away from asteroids are meteoroids. Celestial objects made of ice and dust are comets. Celestial-positioned in or relating to the sky, or outer space as observed in astronomy

8 Real Motion vs. Apparent Motion
Real motion is when the object itself is moving. Apparent motion is when the object appears to be moving because the observer is moving.
