Figure 1 R&D Expenditure in Different Countries
Expenditures in research and development (R&D) expressed as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) provide a widely used measure of an economy's R&D intensity. In 2007, the total R&D expenditure in the US (US $343 billion) comprised about 2.6% of the nation's GDP, as shown in the graph. The US ranked 7 among OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries, following Sweden, Finland, Japan, Korea, Switzerland, and Iceland.
