1 Student Activities Centralized Training
Session 8a K-12 Activity

2 (then click on “Get Involved” tab)
Available Kits (then click on “Get Involved” tab) This is where you add the demonstrations for group engagement

3 Available Kits Pressure Drop Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions
Uses drinking straws and water to demonstrate pressure drop increase due to straw length increase Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions Uses chemical hand warmers and ice packs to demonstrate heat transfer Gamification Uses computer games to teach math and science in a different, fun way Sling Psychrometer Uses thermometers to demonstrate difference between dry and wet bulb temperatures

4 General Format Introduce yourself and your other volunteers
Discuss a bit about what Engineering is about Discuss the properties of air, specifically humidity Hand out psychrometric charts and show/discuss the materials that will be used Walk through the build process Assist during the testing portion Discuss what the students found Take questions

5 Materials Kit Contents On-site Thermometers Packing Tape Rubber bands
Cloth String Psychrometric charts On-site Cardboard Water Scissors or hole punch

6 Instructions Divide into Groups Cut cardboard and puncture top side
Tape thermometers to cardboard Wrap one thermometer with cloth and secure with rubber band Tie string through hole at top

7 Instructions 6. Dip cloth in water 7. Carefully swing the sling psychrometer in a circle for at least two minutes 8. Record the temperatures of both thermometers 9. Consider taking measurements in other conditions 10. Plot the conditions on the psychrometric chart

8 Discussion How did the Relative Humidity and Dew Point vary between inside and outside? What other areas of a school might be useful to check air properties? What can you say about the relative humidity of air if its dry bulb is the same as its wet bulb?
