Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Eternal Father, Son of the Virgin Mary, we thank you for offering your life in sacrifice on the Cross, and for renewing this sacrifice in every Mass celebrated throughout the world. In the Power of the Holy Spirit we adore you and proclaim your living presence in the Eucharist. We desire to imitate the love you show us in your death and resurrection, by loving and serving one another. We ask you to provide the holy and generous priests that are so needed in our Archdiocese today. Lord Jesus, hear our prayer. Amen. Mary Mother of Priests…Pray for us St Kentigern… Pray for us St John Vianney… Pray for us Prayer for vocations to begin or end lessons with.

@RCAGVocations is the official twitter feed for vocations in the Archdiocese of Glasgow. The vocations office is releasing a tweet each day in the month of November as part of the vocations drive. As a lesson starter, ask students to access the twitter If this is not possible, a selection of tweets could be accessed by the teacher before the lesson. Students could be asked to select a tweet to reflect on individually or it could form part of a whole class lesson starter.

The video lasts for around 22 minutes
The video lasts for around 22 minutes. Students could be asked to make notes of any questions they may have about the video or any points of interest they may wish to draw attention to. For those who cannot access youtube online, there are free youtube downloaders available.

Word Cloud The above word cloud contains the words used most frequently throughout the video. Students could be asked to choose one word, or a number of words, and write down how and by who any particular word was used in the video and then they could reflect upon what that word means in their own lives as individuals.

Give students time to speak to the people around them about the video.
Possible discussion questions: How do we understand the role of the priest in our Churches, in our schools and in society as a whole? Is thinking about becoming a priest or a religious (Sister, Brother, Monk, Nun) a reasonable option for young people today? In a world where we are constantly connected and receiving and processing information, how do we become “empty vessels”? How do we make space for God in our lives? In the video, priests are described as “empty vessels through which God works”. Discuss the meaning of this quote and how God works through the priest when he exercises his sacramental ministry.

St John Vianney St John Vianney – For biographical information about St John Vianney, click on his name in the slide above. One of the university students quotes St John Vianney in describing the role of the priest when she says: “…there is no point in having a house full of gold without someone to open the door.” The picture above of St John Vianney is a hyperlink. Click on it for the extended text of this quote: Catechism on the priesthood. This activity would be best suited to senior students. You may wish to select certain paragraphs from this resource that best illustrate the role of the priest and ask them to work in pairs or small groups discussing the meaning of a particular paragraph and applying it or comparing it to their understanding of the priesthood.
