Types of Reactions Chemistry Mr. Manley
2
Vocabulary Reactant Product Combination reaction
Decomposition reaction Single replacement reaction Double replacement reaction Acid-base reaction Combustion reaction
3
Combination Two or more simple compounds combine to form a more complicated compound. A + B AB One example of a Combination reaction is the combination of iron and sulfur to form iron (II) sulfide: 8 Fe + S8 8 FeS
4
Decomposition The opposite of a Combination reaction
A complex structure breaks down into simpler structures AB A + B 2 H2O 2 H2 + O2 2 H2SO4 + 2C12H22O11 24C + 24H2O +2SO2
5
Single replacement One element trades places with another element in a compound A + BC AC + B 2 Na + 2 H2O 2 NaOH + H2 Mg + 2 NaCl MgCl2 + 2 Na
6
Double replacement Anions and cations of two different molecules switch places, forming two entirely different compounds AB + CD AD + CB AgNO3 + KI AgI + KNO3
7
Acid-base A “Special” kind of double replacement reaction that takes place when an acid and base react with each other Forms a salt and water HCl + NaOH NaCl + H2O
8
Combustion oxygen combines with another compound to form water and carbon dioxide. These reactions are exothermic, meaning they produce heat. The combustion of Acetone: C3H6O + 4 O2 3 CO2 + 3 H2O
