To bring this system up to date the plaster laths can be replaced with plasterboard bedded into dry wall adhesive and the screeds formed using a light weight backing plaster which is compatible with the background

If the wall is too high to use a straight edge and level, gauges and a plumb line can be used to set the top and bottom dots
Gauges must be identical
