What now? European Allies (GB, France, Italy) were furious with Germany and wanted them to pay for damages. HOWEVER…Woodrow Wilson’s goal was the “end all wars”…forever. He didn’t think that the Allies should “punish” Germany too harshly.

Woodrow Wilson’s Fourteen Points
Wilson wrote his proposed 14 Points about ten months before the war ended, “peace without victory”. Most of the 14 Points dealt with the idea of Self-Determination. This means that Wilson thought small countries should be allowed to be independent and govern themselves. His 14th “point” was the establishment of the League of Nations A group of nations that could meet together to talk problems out before they got out of hand!

Treaty of Versailles and Wilson’s Struggle
THE BIG FOUR: Woodrow Wilson: USA Georges Clemenceau: France David Lloyd George: Great Britain Vittorio Orlando: Italy GERMANY WAS LEFT OUT of the Paris Peace Talks….therefore they had no say in what happened to them after the war. THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES PUNISHED GERMANY….. Reduced Germany’s size Lost Alsace-Lorraine back to France Lost all coloniesdivided up and given to the “winners” Had to pay cost of war (reparations) to all countries Reduced army, couldn’t make weapons Wilson suffers a massive stroke while traveling the country trying to gain support for the Treaty.

The League of Nations The main goal of the League of Nations was to ensure that war never happened again. Article 10 Provisions that stated an “attack on one as attack on all” Wilson’s plan for “peace without victory” fails: WHY?! U.S. is NOT IN THE LEAGUE! Germany is NOT IN THE LEAGUE The League doesn’t have an army How did the failures of the League lead DIRECTLY to WWII?
