Elements of Design

Line Line is a mark that spans a distance between two points, taking any form along the way. Line refers to the use of outlines and implied lines in artwork, most often used to define shape in 2-D. Line can also pertain to the Line of Sight: the line in which the viewer’s eye travels across the art work.

Shape Shape refers to areas in 2-D space that are defined by edges, setting one space apart from another. There are 2 Types: 1) Geometric-Man Made (square, circle, hexagon, etc.) 2) Organic-Nature Made (a puddle, blob, leaf, boomerang, etc.). A shape stands out from the space next to or around it due to a defined or implied boundary. All objects are shapes and all other 'Elements of Design' are shapes in some way.

Tone/Value Value, or tone, refers to the use of light and dark, shade and highlight, in an artwork. Value is shown visually by a scale with varying shades of gray arranged between black and white called a gradient scale.  Value/tone is critical in a work with no colors.

Form Form is a 3-D geometrical figure (sphere, cube, cylinder, cone, etc). Shading adds gradation marks to make an object of a 2-D surface seem 3-D Form means the whole of a piece's visible elements and the way those elements are united. In this context, form allows viewers to mentally capture the work, understand and attempt to analyze it.

Space Space refers to the distances or areas around, between and within things. There are 2 Types: Negative and Positive. Overlap is the effect where objects appear to be on top of each other. This illusion makes the top element look closer to the observer. Overlapping creates 3 plains: background, foreground and middle ground. Linear Perspective is the concept relating to how an object seems smaller the farther away it gets.

Texture Texture is the quality of a surface. It is implied with other elements such as lines, shading, and variation of color. There are 2 Types: Tactile texture is the actual three-dimension feel of a surface that can be sensed by touched. 2) Visual texture is the illusion of the surfaces. Any texture shown in a photo is a visual texture, meaning the paper is smooth no matter how rough the image shows it to be.

Color Color is the use of hue in artwork.
Defined as primary colors (red, yellow, blue) which cannot be mixed from other hues and secondary colors (green, orange, purple) which are directly mixed from the primary colors. There are 4 schemes. Monochromatic, Analogous, Complimentary, and Triadic Color aids in organization so develop a color strategy and stay consistent with those colors.
