Values of Liberal Democracies
The principles that guide our republic

Values of Democracy (Part 1)
1. We believe that every single person has worth, value, dignity, etc. Sometimes, though, the interests of the many must be placed above the interests of the few or the individual. 2. We believe that all persons are equal We therefore provide “equality of opportunity” for all persons. “Equality of opportunity” is the equality for all to have the same building blocks for success (such as a free public education) and for everyone to have a “level playing field.” We also treat everyone equally before the law. Democracies do NOT guarantee “equality of condition,” which means that we are all equal in wealth, intelligence, athletic ability, etc.

Values of Democracy (Part 2)
3. We believe in majority rule, BUT with minority rights. The majority can usually do what it wants, but it CANNOT take away minority rights (such as freedom of religion). The Constitution (especially the Bill of Rights) limits what the majority can do.

Values of Democracy (Part 3)
4. We accept the need to compromise. If we truly believe that every single person has worth and is equal, we need to value the input of all. We can’t always get what we want! 5. We try to give people as much freedom as possible. We CANNOT guarantee total freedom (that would be anarchy, or the total absence of govt. and rules/laws). That would be awful!
