1. Staying safe on Bonfire Night

2. Bonfire Night is celebrated every year on 5th November with bonfires, the burning of a ‘Guy’ and fireworks. It is an exciting time and can be lots of fun but it is important to remember that bonfires and fireworks can be dangerous. Stay safe this Bonfire Night by following some simple dos and don’ts.

3. Dos and don’ts Do stand well back from the fire and fireworks
Do keep a bucket of water ready for emergencies
Do always ask an adult to light a firework
Do hold a sparkler at arms length
Do wear gloves when holding a sparkler
Don’t go back to a firework after it has been lit
Don’t give a sparkler to anyone who is under the age of five.
Don’t throw fireworks
Don’t carry fireworks in your pockets
Don’t light fireworks after 11pm – this is illegal

4. Pet safety
Make sure your pets are happy on Bonfire Night by following these tips:
Only let your pet outside before it gets dark
Close windows and curtains and put on some music or the TV to drown out the sound of fireworks
Create a quiet space for your pet where they can feel safe

Fireworks can travel at speed of 150mph
Sparklers can reach temperature of degrees Celsius
The reason why you see a firework explode before you hear the bang is because light travels much faster than sound
The original fireworks were made from gunpowder. Today, experts at handling explosives add chemicals for special effects.
