Section 7-5: Linear Inequalities
Objectives: (1) To describe inequalities using variables and graphs. (2) To generalize and analyze real-world problems using words and symbols
2
Inequality Reminders Greater than > Less than < Not equal to ≠
Greater than and equal to > Less than and equal to <
3
Coordinate Plane x < 1
Comparisons Number Line x < 1 Coordinate Plane x < 1 1
4
Graphing Linear Inequalies
Like number lines, if the inequality is < or > you must use a circle The line is drawn as a dotted line If it is < or >, you may use a dot and a solid line. Shade in the region that satisfies the inequality
5
Graph: y < 3x – 2 1st: notice that this is less than and not equal Circle the y-intercept Circle where the next point goes Draw a dotted line through the two circles Shade in the area LESS THAN
6
Graph: y > - ½ x + 3 1st: notice that this is greater than AND equal Find the y-intercept Find where the next point goes Draw a SOLID line through the two circles Shade in the area GREATER THAN
