All about Sherlock Holmes!
By Amy Papworth, Lucy Perrett, Nick Beckford, Ben Thomson and Zoe Mulroney
2
INTELLECTUAL: Sherlock shows how intelligent he is when she quotes a famous German writer called Goethe. This shows how intelligent he is, not many people would know he is and would certainly not be able to quote him in the original German. In the end of chapter 1 he says “ I cannot live without brain work”. This shows he has to be busy at all times otherwise he will become angry and unsatisfied.
3
OBSERVANT: Sherlock is very good at noticing things and observing things. Watson says, ‘You have an extraordinary genius for minutiae.’ The word ‘minutiae’, meaning small details, tells the reader that Sherlock Holmes notices every last small detail. This can be seen in Chapter 1 when Sherlock notices all the small scratches around the keyhole of Watson’s watch. He concludes that Watson’s brother was a drunkard.
4
RESTLESS: The use of the adjective “dull” shows he really hates routine and he always likes to be occupied, also the use of the word “crave” suggests that Sherlock’s head has to be in high places. It is almost like an addiction to him as he needs to be exercising his brain all the time. This can be seen in the rest of the novel at the start of chapter 1 where Watson asks Holmes about what he is taking, they then have a discussion on it. Then Sherlock explains how he gets bored so easily and takes it to balance his mind out.
5
EGOTISTICAL: In the sign of four Sherlock Holmes shows a characteristic of egoism this means that Sherlock thinks very highly of himself, he shows being egotistical when he quotes “ I am the last and highest court of appeal in detection” this quotes shows that Sherlock knows that he is very good at solving cases. This quote is saying if the police cant solve a case then they should go straight to Sherlock. Using the word “highest” this makes Sherlock seem very high opinionated. He quotes ” I am the last and highest” these are both superlatives. Using highest means he is the highest of high. This means you cant get any better.
