5. The Election of 1860 RESULTS Lincoln wins.
Pro-slavery votes are spread thin and Lincoln takes majority of the Electoral College.

7. Breaking with the Union
Many worried newly elected President Lincoln would end slavery
4 days after President Lincoln’s election.
South Carolina met to consider secession.
Secession: the act of formally withdrawing from the Union.
No constitutional barriers existed for leaving the union.
Opposing views
Many felt it was against their duty; and unlawful to simply withdraw from the union.

8. The Confederate States of America
Feb. 1 of 1861
Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas has seceded from the Union
Feb.4
Seceding states met in Montgomery, Alabama and form the Confederate States of America, also known as the Confederacy.
