1 Trio’s Chapter #2 The W’s and categorical and quantitative variables

2 Number off in your groups
If you are the youngest you are a “0” If you are the middle-aged you are a “1” If you are the oldest you are a “2”

3 HOW DO WE MOVE?? If you are the “0”, you never move
If you are the “1”, you move ahead ONE pod each question (check #’s on desk!) If you are the “2”, you move ahead TWO pods each question (check #’s on desk!)

4 Write the names of each member of your pod to the right of the problem
BE SURE TO: Write the names of each member of your pod to the right of the problem at the beginning of each problem as well as the problem. Show all work!

6 QUESTION #1 Because of the difficulty of weighing a bear in the woods, researchers caught and measured 54 bears, recorded their weight, neck size, length and sex. They hope to find a way to estimate weight from the other, more easily determined quantities. State the W’s: 1)Who, What , where, when, why and how. 2) Identify which variables are quantitative and which are categorical

7 Answer to Question #1: WHO: 54 Bears
WHAT: weight, neck size, length, sex WHEN: not specified WHERE: not specified WHY: Since bears are difficult to weigh, researchers hoping to use the relationship between the data they do collect ( see what)to estimate the weight HOW: researchers collected 54 bears they hoped to watch 2) Only categorical variable is the SEX(gender) of the bear , all others are quantitative.

8 What is a rebus? Can you tell what this puzzle is? How about this one?

9 Can you and your group get this one???

11 QUESTION #2 A listing posted by the Arby’s restaurant chain gives, for each sandwiches it sells, the type of meat in the sandwich, the number of calories, and the serving size in ounces. The data might be used to assess the nutritional value of the different sandwiches. State the W’s: 1)Who, What , where, when, why and how. 2) Identify which variables are quantitative and which are categorical

12 Answer to Question 2: WHO: Arby’s sandwiches
WHAT: type of meat, # of calories (cal), and serving size (oz) WHEN: not specified WHERE: Arby’s restaurants WHY: this data might be used to assess the nutritional value of the different sandwiches HOW: information was gathered from each of the sandwiches 2) categorical variable : type of meat quantitative: # of calories and serving size

15 QUESTION #3 AIR TRAVEL: The F. A. A
QUESTION #3 AIR TRAVEL: The F.A.A. monitors airlines for safety and consumer service. For each flight, the carrier must report the type of aircraft, the # of passengers, whether or not the flight departed and arrived on schedule, and any mechanical problems. State the W’s: 1)Who, What , where, when, why and how. 2) Identify which variables are quantitative and which are categorical

16 Answer to Question 3: WHO: All airline flights in the US
WHAT: types of aircraft, # of passengers, whether departures and arrivals were on schedule WHEN: not specified WHERE: United States WHY: info required by the FAA HOW: data is collected from airline flight info 2) categorical variable : type of aircraft, departure and arrival timeliness, mechanical problems quantitative: # of passengers
