4 Lesson: Central Ideas and Summaries
Lesson Topic: Identify the central idea of a passage Question 1: Read the passage. Pushing nature to the brink of extinction also has a direct financial impact. In the United States, thousands of individuals enjoy wildlife entertainment. Activities like fishing, hunting, and hiking account for $108 billion in annual revenues. Those activities also provide 2.6 million jobs. In addition, plants and animals provide a big boost to the tourism industry in many parts of the world. Alaska is famous for its bears and bald eagles. Nature tours and cruises run all year long in that state. Many people also dream of traveling on an African safari. These tourists play a major role in the African economy. For example, one study reported that each tourist in Zambia brings $1,100 to the economy. There is a reason that Americans purchase hundreds of millions of pounds of candy ever year; most people love to eat sweets. However, many sweet foods include a hidden ingredient that is incredibly dangerous to the human body. People should be aware of this harmful additive and avoid it at all costs. High fructose corn syrup is a sweetener that comes from corn, but it is far from natural. The human body does not know how to process this substance, and consuming a lot of it can lead to heart disease and diabetes. The single most important thing a person can do is check each food label for high fructose corn syrup before purchasing an item. What is the author's purpose? to inform to persuade to entertain

8 Writing an Accurate Summary for an Informational Text
Mini-Review Lesson

9 Summary points A summary tells the important information in a selection. A summary includes the important details that support the main idea. A main idea sentence is the starting point of a summary. A summary does NOT include your opinion about the topic.

10 Steps to Summarize Step 1 Highlight the most important points in the reading.    Step 2 Mention the author and the title of the text in your first sentence. Step 3 State the topic of the text and the thesis/main idea at the beginning of your summary. Step 4 Identify the Topic Sentence of each paragraph.

11 Steps to Summarize Step Include only the most important points and supporting details. Step 6 Paraphrase the author’s ideas rather than copy sentences, but be sure to include some of the key terms used in the text. Step 7 Present the ideas in the order in which they were discussed in the reading selection. Step 8 Use transitional expressions to make connections between ideas.

12 Ask yourself the following questions to ensure a quality summary
What happened? What is essential to tell? What was the outcome? Who was involved? Why did this happen? Is that a detail or essential information?

This means to turn the question into a statement. Use words from the question stem in your statement. Example question: What are some ways students can help to stop bullying in their school? Great Response: Bullying is a huge problem in many schools. There are several steps students can take to help stop this problem in their own school. OR Good Response: There are several things students can do to help stop bullying in their school.

18 A Answer the question C Cite Evidence
Answer ALL parts of the question. Some questions have more than one part. Each part separate paragraphs. Using our example question: One thing students can do is to participate in a school wide effort committed to speaking out against bullying. C Cite Evidence This means you will look back to the text to find specific examples that support your answer. Quote the text! --Use evidence based terms to begin your citation. According to the author, research has shown that students who participate in anti-bullying programs in their schools are more likely to have empathy for students who experience bullying.

19 E Explain and Extend RACE Put it all together
You will explain how your evidence from the text supports your answer.You can use your own background knowledge and connections you made from your own experience. Example: One example of this is a poster contest my school had. The topic was “Stand up to Bullies.”The contest seemed to make students really think about how hurtful bullying can be. RACE Put it all together Put all your information into paragraph form.Remember to indent and check for spelling and capitalization!
