Developmental Psychology
Aims to explain growth, change and consistency though the lifespan Looks at how thinking, feeling, and behaviour change throughout a person’s life. Main focus upon development during childhood, as this is the period during an individual's lifespan when the most change occurs.
3
Developmental Psychology
To describe development it is necessary to focus both on… Typical patterns of change (normative development) Individual variations in patterns of change (i.e. idiographic development).
4
Developmental psychology questions…
Is there a predictable pattern individuals follow regarding thought and language and social development? Do children go through gradual changes or are they abrupt changes?
5
Normative development Continual Change is gradual
Discontinuity development Abrupt ‘Stages’ (developmental periods of life) All people go through the same stages, in the same order, but not necessarily at the same rate Are we more Nature or Nurture? A great insight is twin and adoptive studies
6
Bowlby Piaget Vygotsky
Stress the fundamental role of social interaction in the development of cognition. Children come into the world biologically pre-programmed to form attachments. Piaget Children think differently than adults, and stated they go through 4 universal stages of cognitive development. Vygotsky

Moral development Worksheet 1 Obey rules? Or do what is Morally ‘right’ Worksheet 2
10
Two core studies: Kohlberg (1968) Lee et al. (1997)
11
Activity: Kohlberg 1968 In pairs/small groups, you will be provided with a series of statements. Each statement tells information from the study. You are expected to organise each statement into an order. Please use the following headings: Background Method Materials Procedure Results Conclusions Level Stage Moral reasoning
12
Methodology, results, conclusions – worksheet 3
13
In groups, let’s evaluate
Using your capture sheets, evaluate Kohlberg’s study
14
Lee et al. 1997 In pairs, using worksheet 1, you are asked to write definitions for key terms. If you are unsure of some, you are expected to use a variety of sources to find out their definitions to secure an understanding

17
Group work: Evaluate using the other side of your CS!
When you think you are finished Create a poster/mindmap or other visual image which represents the study. You are expected to use as little words as possible. Instead, use diagrams, drawings etc.
18
In the middle of your poster(s), identify the similarities and differences between each study!
19
Key question How does each study relate to the key theme? And how does each study relate to the area of psychology its placed within
